Mac Viruses

Well, the flu season is upon us and with all those viruses floating around I thought we should look at your Mac catching one.

“But Macs don't get viruses”. Not true. All operating systems are vulnerable to getting sick including Macs. What you need to understand is Macs don't get Windows viruses and Windows PCs don't get Mac viruses. While you can't get a PC virus you are however capable of transferring one. I will be explaining and examining the basic bad stuff out there and include some advice on how to keep your Mac healthy. Sorry old timers, but this article is meant for Mac OS X. Before I get started, if you are experiencing problems with a Mac, please don't assume that is a virus. I have seen many users go out and buy Norton AntiVirus only to discover all they had was a corrupted .plist (preference file) or some other easily correctable condition.

What is a computer virus?

Actually there are several nasty things that get lumped together as “viruses”. Malware, short for malicious software, is created to sneak into your computer and operate without your consent. Malware could be as simple as reporting your favorite websites to taking your computer down. Trojan horses, viruses, worms, adware, spyware, rootkits and macros fall under the category of malware.

A trojan horse or trojan comes from Greek mythology where the people of Troy rolled this huge wooden horse into their city only to later discover it was housing Greek soldiers. That is exactly what a trojan horse does. A trojan pretends to be some useful/essential plugin or a great free game when in reality, it is designed to do harmful things to your computer.

A computer virus is like a regular virus that travels from one person to another, only it spreads its bad code from one computer to another. Typically these are transferred via email, networks, Internet, USB drives, CDs, DVDs and dare I say floppy disks.

Worms differ from viruses in that they don't require attachment to a program, but just spread from the host computer.

Adware is just what it sounds like, advertisements that run on your computer after software was installed.

Just like real world spies, Spyware is meant to be hidden from the computer user and secretly monitors the users actions or even gathers personal data. There also is commercial Spyware which is intentionally installed to covertly observe the actions of the user. Typically these are utilized to check that John is doing his work and not playing online poker.

Rootkit come from the Unix term Root which is a high level user. Rootkits are one or more programs targeted to conceal themselves from the user and undermine the operating system.

Macros take advantage of Microsoft Word's macro language which is used to automate actions, to infect your Word files.

So how vulnerable are the Macs?

Gotta get it up to 88 MPH

I hope I did not disappoint the DeLorean fans that own those cool cars thinking they found a source for parts —- sorry.

While I don’t currently have a flux capacitor built into my Mac’s at home, there are times when I need to be able to go back in time.

Hello, for those who do not know me, and for that matter those who do. I am Calvin Carson and I will be here on regular basis with mostly stuff about the Mac but on occasion I will post other neat stuff that I come across. Usually they will be things that you can use with or supply fodder to your Mac projects. I also occasionally co-host a radio show on 760 AM WJR in Detroit called “The Internet Advisor” on Saturdays. You can also catch it on the web if you can get it in one of the 38 states that the signal reaches at http://www.internetadvisor.net

Apple just released the Apple TV 3.0 update! Totally new layout that is easier to navigate. It also supports iTunes Extras, LP and Genius Mixes from iTunes. ITunes also got an update to 9.0.2 to support the new Apple TV update. You can update to 3.0 from your Apple TV's General Settings Menu. Takes about 10 minutes to do. It will also reboot a few times during the process. — Post From My iPhone 3GS

Apple Miniature Display Connector Options

On October 28, 2009, in Mac, by James R. Cutler

MiniDisplayPortConnecting to recent Macs can be an issue because all the newer Macs use miniature connectors for displays. The connectors on the Mac carry the same digital signals as their bigger counterparts.

This is great for making connectors fit on the side of a MacBook or the back of a Mini. And is also great if you like buying adapters for connecting your displays. Here are some options, including my favorite.

Welcome to the MacNews Blog!

MacNews has been a publication of MacGroup-Detroit since 1986! A few years ago we went from a printed and online version of MacNews to an all online version in PDF. We are continuing the evolution of MacNews by transitioning it from a monthly PDF to a daily blog. There are several advantages to a blog over a static PDF that's delivered once a month:

  • With a blog we can deliver information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as it happens
  • There are no space constraints as we don't have to conform to a set page or publication size
  • We can include more interactive content easier such as videos
  • Writers can publish posts themselves instead of having to wait for the newsletter to be laid out.
  • You can subscribe to the RSS feed so that you can receive notifications of new posts in your favorite RSS reader such as Mail or Safari

We're starting with 5 dedicated staff writers: Jack Beckman, Calvin Carson, Phyllis Evans, Chita Hunter and myself have all volunteered to post content Monday through Friday so that you'll have something to check out every day! So please help me in congratulating these outstanding volunteers once again.

Does this mean that the iBBS is going away?

Absolutely not! The iBBS is great for two way discussions and helping members get answers to their questions. It's a forum that has worked out quite well for us over the years and it will continue as is. The MacNews Blog is more about delivering information to members such as reviews, tips, helpful links, product announcements, etc.
