Like many, I took the jump to iOS 5 last week. While I didn’t have any major disasters, it did break some things. The two that had me muttering were the AirKast apps for local radio station WJR-AM that I use to listen to our own Cal Carson on Saturdays (you do listen to The Internet Advisor, don’t you?) and New Jersey 101.5 FM. The Jersey station has my favorite afternoon duo, Deminski & Doyle. I started listening to them when they first came to Detroit in 1999.
After checking websites for both stations, I found that I needed two new apps, but rather than being dedicated to a single radio station, these both cover a multitude of stations. TuneIn Radio is the one I found for WJR, and I have to say it is a slick app. Sports? As I type this, I’m listening to the Leafs play the Avalanche via 640 AM, Richmond Hill, Ontario. Want Halloween radio? It has that, too. Save your favorite stations with a tap on the little heart icon. Don’t like the add at the top of the screen. You can get rid of it for $.99. Easy to use. Give it a try.
The second replacement app is called radioPup and it’s totally free. While it works on the iPad as well as the iPhone and touch, the screen is formatted only for the small screen. It works, though, and that’s the important thing. It doesn’t have as many stations, it does let you search by area for local stations in Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota and a couple of other states. Still, the price is right. If you’re from the Detroit area and also miss Deminski & Doyle, it’s the best way to listen to them.
Update: Just received a reply to my message to the lovely people at AirKast. After deleting the dead apps, restarting the iPad & touch, then downloading fresh copies of the apps, my dedicated radio apps are once again working. Now, that’s good customer service!
The countdown to Halloween is on. Here’s a video from a couple of years ago. New one next week!
