A couple of days ago I needed to measure a piece of knitting that was on my needles. As usual, I couldn’t immediately put my hands on one of my many tape measures or rulers, so taking the lazy way out, I checked the iOS App Store. I managed to find one that works with all iOS devices including the iPhone 3 GS through 5, iPad mini and iPod touch (3rd through 5th gen). It’s an odd little freebie called Light & Ruler. It’s simple, but gives you a ruler that will measure length & width and calculate area in inches and centimeters, a protractor to measure angles that can work with the camera, a level that also works with the camera, and finally, an SOS lamp. I have no idea why they included that last bit, but if you ever need to send an SOS, you can do it using red, blue, green or white light. All I’ll use is the ruler, and I’m happy to say that it seems accurate on both my 4th gen touch and iPad mini. Best of all, the price was right — free. Ignore the More… tab. It just tries to sell you more apps from the developer. Unfortunately, none are in English. Still, it’s a handy little app.
