A favorite design technique is to create what is called Distressed Text.
You can use just about any image of texture (bark, paneling, grass, sand, concrete, etc.) as a background to create the effect.
In the following video, I take you through creating Distressed Text using Adobe Illustrator CC 2014, though you can pull this off using earlier versions of Adobe Illustrator as well. Using Illustrator has several benefits:
- The art object remains vector
- The art object is scalable without losing integrity
- The art object is resolution independent
