Volunteer of the Month

MacGroup recognizes Bruce Mandel as Volunteer of the Month

Bruce MandelBruce walked into our group and went straight to work. Each month since he's been a member he has worked tirelessly to improve our video production. He brings in his professional level equipment and know-how because he saw a need and had a desire for our videos to be the best! Not only did Bruce raise our video production quaily to the next level, but he also worked to bring in Tony Madej from Videogenics Productions to show the Ink Caddy II system at a recent meeting. I should also note that Bruce didn't even own a Mac when he joined! He had a Mac on his wishlist for home (thanks to another great volunteer, Dave McGuire - Bruce has a Mac at home now) and still plans to get one for his daughter who's attending college. Bruce has gone the extra mile!

MacGroup recognizes Jack Beckman as Volunteer of the Month

Jack BeckmanJack has been a long time volunteer at the Genius Table works very hard to answer member questions on our iBBS as well. However, being the true volunteer that he is, he stepped up once again and wrote a program called TicketDrum for us to use to do our door prize drawings. Jack didn't ask anything in return for this and he has responded quickly to just about every feature request I have thrown at him. This app has gotten so good that I have pushed Jack to market it to the rest of the user group community. Jack could have just taken the money and run, however he has pledged to donate half of the TicketDrum proceeds to MacGroup-Detroit.

MacGroup recognizes Barbara Quincey as Volunteer of the Month

Barbara QuinceyBarbara stepped in and helped out when we needed her the most at our 20th Anniversary Meeting. The crowd was large (although nice for the most part) and we were short handed at the registration table. Rather than just sit back and enjoy the meeting, Barbara asked, "is there anything I can do to help?" The volunteers at the registration table took her up on her offer and she was very instrumental in making sure the line flowed smoothly. Barbara, on behalf of the rest of the volunteers and the group we thank you for your efforts and helping out the group. Most members come to MacGroup to take advantage of what it has to offer, there are a few that come to the group to offer something back.

September 2006

MacGroup recognizes Calvin Carson as Volunteer of the Month

Calvin CarsonCalvin has been a member since February 1992. He has helped in many capacities over the years. However, in recent years Calvin has been instrumental in spreading the MacGroup gospel and helping promote our group. Calvin helps out at the meeting with the prize drawings and wherever else he is needed. At our 20th Anniversary Meeting Cal went over and above the call of duty by not only filling in as our MC, but also maning one of the cameras that was used to video tape the meeting. He was literally in more than one place at a time, both on stage and behind the camera. Calvin brings his sense of humor to our meetings and makes us all remember that not only are we here to learn more about our Macs, but also to have a good time doing so. It's a pleasure naming Calvin Carson as Volunteer of the Month!

MacGroup recognizes Bill Carver as Volunteer of the Month

Bill CarverBill Carver has been very helpful to many of our members over the years. So it comes as no surprise that Bill has been selected as this month's Volunteer of the Month. His most recent good deed was that he took time out of his busy schedule to come over to the Birmingham Temple during the week prior to our last meeting to work with Terry on our Wi-Fi issues. Bill had figured out that we were probably somehow exceeding the limits of the SBC router's DHCP address server. So he was bound and determined to figure out how to bypass it and use our AirPort Base Stations to do the DHCP serving. He was successful and during last month's meeting the internet connection worked just fine. It should also go on record that MacGroup member James Cutler also volunteered to come over and drill the necessary hole to bring the DSL line into our meeting room.

July 2006

MacGroup recognizes Liz Mack as Volunteer of the Month

Liz MackLiz Mack gave a wonderful presentation at last month's meeting called - "The me I see." This presentation was all about Self Portraits. It was extremely well done and included artwork from some of the world's greatest artists Liz created the presentation using Apple's Keynote app. It's always nice to have a presentation from one of our own. Liz approached me several months ago with the idea to do this presentation. We wanted to make sure that she would have enough time to show it in its entirety so we scheduled it before the main meeting in June. Judging by the number of people applauding at the end, it was well received by our members. Great job Liz!

June 2006

MacGroup recognizes Steven Gold as Volunteer of the Month

Steven GoldSteven stepped up to the plate last month and volunteered to do a demo on how to protect yourself from email phishing scams. His presentation very well received. Steven actually raised his hand a few months back to do this presentation. Due to his busy work schedule and other topics that were going on in the last couple of months, we decided to postpone his presentation until the May meeting which was all about members helping members. Steven along with the MacGroup Genius Table volunteers did an excellent job showing their favorite techniques and software applications that they use on a daily basis. It's this kind of volunteerism that has made MacGroup what it is today.

MacGroup recognizes Chita Hunter as Volunteer of the Month

Chita HunterChita has been a MacGroup member since 1993. She has always been a helpful resource for members trying to get more out of their Macs. Chita has used her skills to train several members in her spare time. As a part of her dedication to MacGroup, Chita signed up as a Lifetime Member! You might have noticed that Chita has become a regular writer for MacNews. This is a tremendous help to our group as MacNews content isn't always easy to come by. Chita has also volunteered on several occasions to do demonstrations at the meetings. Her latest act of volunteerism comes in the form of helping out at the Genius Table! Starting at the April meeting, Chita officially sat at the Genius Table to help members with their questions. It's for these reasons that we recognize Chita as the MacGroup Volunteer of the Month!

April 2006

MacGroup recognizes Brian Stone as Volunteer of the Month

Brian StoneBrian has only been a member of MacGroup since October 2003. However, he has really stepped up to the plate and has really been pitching in where needed. He and his wife Charlotte now volunteer regularly at the reception table each month (a thankless job) and Brian has always offered a helping hand. He volunteered on several occasions to help with the editing of the meeting videos. He offered suggestions on various Afterglow restaurants. Brian also even volunteered to help MacGroup members with their computers on his own time by doing upgrades and repairs where necessary. He truly embodies the spirit of our group and that's why he's our April Volunteer of the month!

March 2006

MacGroup recognizes Dave McGuire as Volunteer of the Month

Dave McGuire"Known by some as Mr. Haney", Dave McGuire is a MacGroup member that is always willing to help with hardware issues. Lately in particular, legacy Mac hardware. Whether it's finding a cache of eMates for sale at great prices for MacGroup members that want to collect, or just helping out MacGroup members on the iBBS, Dave is always there and present with advice and whit. He seems to always have connections with some sort of legacy Mac piece that he is willing to do a trade or a service for payment in Pepsi in some cases. In addition to all of the above, he works in an Apple store and helps to facilitate discounts for some of the great prizes for our raffles at the end of the MacGroup meetings. Thanks for being part Dave!

February 2006

MacGroup would like to recognize Shirley Kussner for her hard work and dedication to MacGroup-Detroit

Shirley KussnerShirley goes over and above the call of duty each month by volunteering as our videographer and standing the entire meeting to make the recording. Recently Shirley broke her arm and rather than miss the January meeting or have someone else do the recording Shirley with her sling and all stood there and performed her volunteer task. Shirley we appreciate all that you do!

January 2006

MacGroup would like to recognize Phyllis Evans for her continued dedication and work in MacGroup-Detroit

Phyllis Evans Phyllis continues to be instrumental in helping our members at the Genius Table each month as well as with her Tips and Tricks column in MacNews! Phyllis we greatly appreciate your efforts!
